We are so beyond thrilled to be making our market debut at The Lingerie Journal's Designer Showcase this February in New York! A new player in the tradeshow scene going strong in its second season, the Designer Showcase is specifically catering to the small and independent lingerie designers with a personalized and intimate experience! We have a beautiful suite at the AKA hotel to present our A/W12 unveiling (and let me be the first to promise you, this season is a STUNNER), along with a full house of other wonderful gems such as Toad Lillie, Good Night Gilda, Ann Vogue, Clare Bare, Ombrato and Priscilla Jade! We promise to have comfy lounge seating area, girlie cocktails, and enough luxury underpinnings to melt even the most stubborn heart! Runway Photos!

As the press coverage comes trickling in, we wanted to share with you some of our favorite shots of the runway. What a magical affair...we took over Millennium Park in downtown Chicago with fashionable glamour, showcasing 6 looks from our upcoming Spring 2012 collection, Magic Garden. The show included 15 designers in all, each a particpant of the Chicago Fashion Incubator, and was presented by Macy's and Chicago Social Magazine, with models from Ford Model Management and live musical accompaniment plus amazing violinist who at times walked the runway herself while playing. We were also pleasantly surprised to have the lovely (and very dapper dressed) actor Billy Zane in attendance! Please enjoy:

Fashion Focus!

My goodness, I think we are about due for a blog update, no? It is always busy over here in the lacy confines of Dottie's Delights headquarters, but this month of October is just unprecedented. But, in a good way, so I am certainly not complaining. ;) Wholesale orders, custom orders, special photo shoots, fashion shows, oh my!

Thus, I must be getting back to it, but I just wanted to make sure everyone has purchased their tickets to our fabulous runway presentation at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago for this Tuesday. We will be kicking off Fashion Focus, which is a weeklong celebration of the thriving local fashion industry in our fair city, and we will have some very special guest and surprises (gosh, I wish I could share them all!) This will be the first in-person look at our Spring 2012 offerings and I just can't wait.

It will be a grand affair you definitely do not want to miss. See you there!

Girlie Fun at Indie Wed's Summer Soiree

Hello lovely Dottie’s fans! Intern Jennifer here to tell you about our latest fabulous event!

We had the joy of participating in the Indie Wed bridal expo last week. We loved meeting all of your pretty faces; thank you to everyone who came! There were models and music and sweet treats galore! Two of our own lovely pinup gals walked the event in Dottie’s lingerie and chatted with brides-to-be.

The event was held at the Aérée Loft at Room 1520 and there were so many wonderful vendors. We were in the elegant Bridal Salon and our room alone featured Truffle Truffle, Mojuba, and Head2Toe Mobile Spa!

Vaudeville Villains: The Real Murderesses of Chicago

Hello lovelies! Dottie’s intern, Jennifer, here! At Dottie’s Delights we usually focus on mid-century design but we are really full vintage lovers at heart. Recently, we have been positively titillated with Jazz-age hometown Chicago and we would love to share some fascinating tidbits with you.

Many of you have seen the 2002 musical film Chicago starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, and Richard Gere (if you haven’t you definitely should). Or maybe you’ve seen the Broadway musical of the same name. The story centers around the trials of two spotlight-loving, jazz-hand-waving murderesses who found themselves imprisoned in the Cook County jail in the 1920s.

The show is a non-stop spectacle full of infectious song and dance numbers and dozens of fabulous costume changes. The whole production is simply loaded with attitude and sex-appeal. And that’s where the true story comes into play. All of this sex appeal was inspired by two very real 1920s Chicagoans. Oh yes, the characters of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart were based on the true life stories of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan. Written by Maurine Watkins, the story and characters are derived from her experiences as a young reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Belva Gaertner herself even came to see the show when it opened in 1927.

Belva Gaertner, the inspiration for Velma Kelly, was a three time divorced cabaret singer who performed under the stage name Belle Brown. In 1924 Belva shot and killed Walter Law, her lover, in the front seat of her car. The police found blood-soaked clothes at her apartment but Belva claimed she was drunk and didn’t remember what had happened. She even told Maurine Watkins “Gin and guns – either one is bad enough, but together they get you in a dickens of a mess, don’t they?” Her lawyer got her acquitted by claiming that Law might have killed himself with the gun. And so Belva was free to grace the stage again.

Beulah Annan, the real woman behind Roxie Hart, was born and raised in Kentucky then moved to Chicago with her car mechanic husband Al Annan. Al found a job and Beulah found a lover. Her affair with Harry Kalstedt ended tragically one night when, after a heated argument, she shot him in the back. She is then said to have sat drinking cocktails and listening to “Hula Lou” on a loop for several hours until Al came home. Beulah changed her story numerous times, first confessing to the murder, then claiming self defense. Her husband stood by her, paying for the best lawyer possible. Upon her acquittal, she rewarded his loyalty by leaving him.

Belva and Beulah were America’s first real celebrity criminals with their names and photos all over the press. These villainous vixens were acquitted largely because of their public appeal and the mass amounts of corruption of the times. Not all of the film is true. Contrary to the character of Roxie Hart, Beulah never became a vaudeville star (she did, however, feign pregnancy during her trial to gain sympathy from the jury). Belva never killed her sister as Velma did in the film. We don’t even know if the two women ever met each other! And something tells me the real Cook County jail didn’t offer so many costume changes for poor Belva and Beulah. But these ladies really were some lucky free wheelin’ flappers and the dark glamour of their stories lends itself perfectly to the vaudeville stage in the gritty music halls and speakeasies of the day.

Most importantly, these ladies were the fearless faces of a new generation. “In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper” (Jennifer Rosenberg)

So let’s pay tribute to Belva and Beulah. Put on your sassiest threads and go crazy! Just don’t let the gin go to your head.

Vitamin Water Inspired by Design Fashion Show!

Phew! We have been super busy lately, swamped with event season! Trunk shows, fashion shows, photo parties, Viva Las Vegas, oh my! We not finished yet, but I had to share a few of the photos from one of the latest, a really fun fashion show event sponsored by Vitamin Water, where they invited 7 local Chicago designers to showcase 2 looks based off of a Vitamin Water flavor, and 2 pieces from our own collections. It was such an amazingly colorful event, just in time for one of the first warm days here...a perfect way to bring in the summer attitude! We were very honored to be able to take part and bring our own flavor of sexy summer fun!

Underwear Out Where?

Hello Lovelies, Heather here to share with you my favorite trend obsession: Lingerie as outerwear. Yes, as in, outdoors! I know we all absolutely love our dainty little underpinnings and spend all our money on the fabulous little bra and matching panty or bustier we just can’t live without, but it always seems like such a shame to only be able to wear it behind closed doors, doesn’t it? It’s time to open the doors and let the sun shine on that sexy little number! Lingerie as outerwear is popping up everywhere on the runways, trend websites and blogs everywhere. Although it has been making it’s appearances since 2008, it has only in the past year become the most popular trend. So I thought I’d do a little research on my own and share with you some of my favs.

First, may I remind you, I don’t mean run around the city in your bra and panties, I mean doll up that drab suit of yours with a sassy bralet and high-waisted pant. Or even better, for a night of cocktails try wearing that vintage camisole or slip you have collecting dust in the back or your closet with a little sweater jacket and some heels and you are ready for a night out on the town. Now that I've done enough talking, let me show you some looks, spanning from Dior Couture to inspired street wear and all the in between…

Celebrity Street Trend

My favorite thing I have been obsessing about is mock suspenders. Many companies have made attempts, but I must say that House of Holland is the original, and nothing beats original. WhoWhatWear posted this photo showing Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Daisy Lowe and Taylor Momsen and Byrdie Bell flashing some stockings.

These House of Holland tights are high quality, meaning you can wear them more than once without getting a run, and only cost around $20, which is what you would pay at any department store for those one time use stockings that barely last through the day without a snag or run.

Christian Dior Couture Fall 2009

The Christian Dior Couture Fall 2009 Collection is one of my favorites from the runway over the last few years. It is the perfect combination of the classic Dior 'New Look' and vintage style lingerie making for a flashy and yet glamorous look of lingerie as outerwear. Organza skirts and tap shorts reveal garter straps, bright bubble skirts matched with satin bras... ahhhhh.

Christian Dior Couture Fall 2009

My favorite from the collection is the nude, corselette with garter straps underneath the most beautifully tailored shear number. A vintage girdle is probably the easiest piece to dress up…

Byrdie Bell

Here, Byrdie Bell literally wore a vintage girdle as a skirt with a simple button up, and voila! I got this photo from Vintage-Rouge, they seem to have the right idea saying the girdle skirt is genius. I originally found Byrdie's girdle skirt on Now Magazine, but they put her on the "Worst-Dressed" list, whatever.

Antonio Berardi Spring 2010 RTW

Antonio Berardi's looks are a great alternative for those who want to mix up the biz wardrobe. I love the mix between sexy and business, a clean cut tailored suit looks stunning with a simple little bralet or bustier peeking from underneath.

VPL 'Strainer Bra

Speaking of peeking from underneath, the VPL 'Strainer Bra' is the perfect bra to layer under that sheer blouse or under a deep-v tank, or even alone on a hot summers day.

Milla Jovovich "Character Driven" NY Times Magazine

Milla Jovovich was recently in the NY Times magazine in this photo shoot "Character Driven," with some fabulous high-waisted panties, the most risqué of the lingerie as outerwear looks. But I mean, hey, if you got it and you aren’t afraid to show it, flaunt it! Of course, not everyone is going to run out of the house in their panties, but it is definitely a look celebrities have been running around town in lately.

Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller was seen prancing around town in a pair of her own panties! She pulls of this look great and understands the concept of show only one or the other, legs or cleavage. If you are going to leave the house in a pair of underwear, cover the ta-ta’s!

Now that I have shared with you all the things that I would love to run out of the house in, go root through your closet and find some frilly little things to mix into your wardrobe. You will impress everyone, including yourself, at how fabulous you can look out in public in your underwear!

Playboy: The Cartoonists

If you are a Dottie’s fan, that must mean your love for vintage doesn’t end at lingerie, am I right? How about vintage cartoons featuring the lifestyle of the fabulous dolled up beauties and the playboys of the most infamous era in American history? Would it excite you to know that it all started here, in our beloved Chicago half a century ago with the help of the playboy of the time, Hugh M. Hefner? I happen to be a huge fan of Playboy and thought I would share with you part of the history that made this magazine so famous in the men’s magazine world.

After reading his biography titled, Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream, I learned that Hefner, also known as Hef, loved to make light of sexuality, especially during the sexual revolution happening back in the 50’s and 60’s. So when he started up a revolutionary magazine called Playboy, he gathered up some friends and went to work, first in his home, then at the first Playboy headquarters at 11 E. Superior Street in downtown Chicago. The cartoons have been making history ever since. I took the liberty of choosing a handful of cartoons by these talented fellas to share with you so enjoy!

LeRoy Neiman, who was a long time friend of Hef from the days of working at Carson Pirie Scott, was one of the major Playboy humorists. He created the infamous Femlin, the pixie female who is always dressed in her long back gloves, black stockings and high heels.

“Femlin” made such a name for herself with the magazine that to this day, every issue of Playboy displays this little beloved icon.

Jack Cole was first published in Playboy in 1954. His cartoons are well-known for its gag style with voluptuous, full-figured women, often accompanied by an old ‘geezer.’

A popular series published on several occasions was “Females by Cole,” drawn in black ink similar to Shel Silverstein’s style

Shel Silverstein, who met Hef at back in 1956, is acknowledged for his most well-known contribution to Playboy magazine is his comic epic. It was a travel series which Hef summed up as “Shel’s humanity.”

Gahan Wilson’s work, also published in every issue of Playboy, has a bit more grim humor than most others in the magazine; however it’s still just as important. Gahan Wilson: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons is a great book to add to any artistic collection.

The more risqué sexual humorists, Erich Sokol, Al Stine, Gardener Rea and John Dempsey are all featured in many issues of Playboy for their interpretations on the escapades between sexes.

If you want to see more Playboy cartoons, you definitely want to check out the 366 page book Playboy: The Cartoons, filled cover to cover with tons of work straight from the magazine from the last half century! Hef’s biography is also a very good read. I didn’t think too much of it until I saw it sitting on the shelf at the local library and couldn’t put it down after reading page one. Most of these humorists are still publishing in Playboy today so if you want a good laugh, go get one of the magazine rack!

Valentine's Pin-Up Photo Shoot Event!

I am soo excited to finally be able to announce a fabulous event that I have been dreaming of for ages! It just so happens we were able to pull it off just in time for Valentine's Day with some amazing sponsors to boot!

We are partnering up with Benefit Cosmetics to take over the entire 9th floor event space at Macy's on State Street and we are going BIG!

In celebration of the Lily Collection, my official debut collection which is coming out this spring, we are putting together 3 different classic pin-up vignettes and transforming guests head-to-toe with luxury pin-up glamour for your very own professional fashion photoshoot! One vignette to suit every personality: the ultra girlie all pink set, the Bettie Page inspired "bad girl" scene, and the more classic elegance boudoir set (think natural sexy getting ready in the mirror of your vanity style)!

This is open to everyone, we are a super sweet all girl team and will make you look your best in a warm and welcoming environment! My goodness and my apologies! I can't believe it's been so long since my last post! Much of it of course has to do with all of the winter holidays, which I hope were exceedingly grand for all of you! The blog may have been a little quiet, but things were still bustling over on the facebook page. Are you a fan yet? You certainly should be if you don't want to miss out on any of the action. Special secret posts, exclusive previews, event ideas and your chance to give me feedback and input on new design ideas! What's not to like?

So, in line with all of this, I thought I would create a post based on some of favorites from other blogs and pretty things to follow online. As much as I love having this venue for posting long-winded updates and photo stories, it has never been, nor will it ever likely be, a daily updated feast of information. There are plenty of other online who do this and do it well!

Let's start off with two of my major favorites in the lingerie world: The Lingerie Addict and the Frou Frou's Fashionista blog, shall we?

The former is run by the darling Ms. Treacle Tart, who gives wonderful personalized account of her views in the lingerie world. I like her blog because she keeps things easy to read, for both lingerie beginners and enthusiasts alike, and loves to keep the dialog open with her readers! Ms. Tart is a total independent voice, without a store or line or pre-existing tie to the industry, so she makes a point to focus on product reviews and cute little informative guides on wearing lingerie. Case in point: Ms. Tart makes it easy for us: instead of having to choose a favorite she has created a blog post highlighting the top 20 blog posts of 2010! Gracious!)

Now, the latter comes from the grand luxury boutique in Los Angeles, Faire Frou Frou, (ohmygoodness, have you seen their chandelier and mirrors??) the blog takes the fabulous high end tastes of the store and brings it to another level with a plethora of posts on fashion magazine spreads, unique fluffy burlesque accessories to spoil yourself with, gift guides, and in-depth highlights on brands you might not have otherwise heard of. Alison Rubke, one of the owners of this mother-daughter team, is a sweetheart and you can tell she is passionate about what she does and it shows through her carefully curated product choices! One of my favorite recent examples is this post highlighting a Madison Magazine spread on the lovely Ms. Dita Von Teese:

Speaking of some awesome lingerie-rich high fashion magazine spreads, I've been really digging the heavy 60's vibe that's been popping up a lot this year. Vintage styles are always coming around here and there, and I will be the first to admit and I am not one to care too much about fickle fashion trending. But I've always been a fan of the smoldering 60's heavy eyeliner look, and I'm happy to see it being done well again and again:

Being as this is a women's lingerie designer blog, at first thought, you may think a men's based following like The Selvedge Yard would be out of place. But then you think a little more, and it of course makes sense. Men love lingerie just as much as we do. And this blog is such a treasure of vintage images and well-researched little history lessons of things you are actually interested in, like pin-up girls and the origin of everything from New Years to Sailor Jerry to every great film icon. It is not exclusively for vintage things, but it is heavily inspired by such.

Hello Dottie's Fans!!!

Stephanie's intern Kelsey here to fill you all in on how amazing the CFI Fashion Focus show was!!!

First off I'd like to say just how great the tent and everyone in it looked!! There were appetizers and drinks, mingling and fun.

Besides putting lookbooks and business cards into each gift bag (pictured on each chair), my only job for the evening was to be on 'belly button' patrol. These girl's were supposed to wear the foundations up on the natural waist, which unforunately some did not do, making their belly buttons show. But since there were already dressers provided for the show I was unable to be backstage, therefore, unable to catch that mistake. Just an inch or two higher and oh, the difference it makes! How frustrating!

The bowler hats were work of the shows stylist, but after the suggestion of a little veil for the white lingerie, Stephanie was able to contact another talented local artist: Love, Lulu Mae who ever so graciously let us borrow a few of her amazing hair pieces for not only the bride but also the two pink burlesque twins...she is so sweet and her work is AMAZING!!!!!

I am so excited to announce that Dottie's Delights will be launching the first official collection -- called The Lily Collection for Spring 2011 -- to premiere at Fashion Focus Chicago on October 19th, 2010 kicking off the festivites at Millenium Park! View the entire line-up of events here.

Macy's State Street celebrates Fashion's Night Out!

I bet most of you are already arranging plans for tomorrow night, why not come celebrate Chicago's First Fashion's Night Out? That's right! Tomorrow, Friday September 10th, 2010 Macy's on State Street is joining in on the fun New York started last year and the Chicago Fashion Incubator designers are participating!

From 11am to 1pm all six designers will be hard at work at the Randolph/State Street window, watch the creative process in action as it transforms right in front of your eyes! The work will continue throughout the day and the resulting product will stay on display all weekend, so make sure to stop by to take a peek.

But that's not all! From 6pm to 11pm is the real shopping extravaganza throughout Macy's -- I will be set up on the 3rd floor with the other women's wear designers from the CFI, as well as other important local Chicago designers! Come get a sneak peek at new samples and trunk show specials, or learn of all the possibilities custom foundation wear has to offer! Don't worry, the man in your life is not forgotten, as our 2 resident menswear designers will be well represented on the 1st floor men's department as well. Do I even need to mention the FREE drinks, FUN music and a FABULOUS photo booth that will be available for making all your nights memories stay alive? And of course, MORE! A night definitely not to be missed!

Finally! Don Julio Loft Recap!

I wanted to thank everyone who came out for an amazing time for the Don Julio Loft experience! The space was hot -- in more ways than one! There was such a packed crowd, the air conditioning definitely felt a little lacking, but I suppose that just adds to the sexy summer vibe of a posh tequila event!
So, as a recap, one of the highlights of the 3-day celebration was each of the Chicago Fashion Incubator designers creating a look based one of the 5 bottles of Don Julio's tequila varieties, plus one based on the man himself. I of course chose the 1942 bottle, which is one of the higher end options and a perfect year to lend itself to a vintage style designer. I set out to work researching lingerie ads and other specific sources for lingerie styles that came out in the year 1942. With the help of one of my interns, Anna Raben, we were able to find some beautiful examples:

I actually started with a one piece design in a various browns with red and gold accents, but ultimately I didn't like the direction it was going, so the night before the event, I scrapped it and started again. I may have finished with only 2 hours to spare [read: sleep], but I was a lot more pleased with the final outcome:

This piece focused more on the elegance and sophistication of the 1942 variety, picking up the "brilliant golden hue" in the dupioni silk base fabric and the lace colors were inspired by some of the flavor notes. If you look really close, you can see the shape of the bottle imitated in the accents of the vanilla colored lace, as well as the top stitching on the bottom of the bra cups. And of course, 1942 is one of their spicier tequilas in the line, perfect for sipping on it's own, and I don't think there's much spicer than a sexy piece of lingerie on a hot summer night. ;) For more info on this fine liquor, please visit donjulio.com

The three days featured a media preview and opening night gala, with these tequila inspired garments in main focus. The second day was a highly exclusive VIP dinner for Chicago celebrities and socialites, and the final day was the full blow-up with a full fashion show and performance by Shiny Toy Guns. And boy was it packed!

We stayed in the wild hubub that is the backstage at a fashion show: answering questions, prepping the assistants, approving shoes, and making final alterations, while the models went in for hair and make up.

Thanks to Ford Modeling Agency, we had some damn fine ladies to rock that runway:

The liquor was flowing, the amazing hors d'oeuvre were making the rounds, Shiny Toy Guns rocked the house, and people were definitely having a good time, even with a sweat bead here and there.

The party went on all night long, and even as the crowds finally started to thin, fun and dancing continued! I love this photo.

R.I.P. Dr. Edward Pechter!

So, I am really gearing up now for the Spring 2011 line. Solidifying what is really possible to manufacture, on what scale, in what colors and ESPECIALLY in what sizes! It's looking like this season I will be focusing only on the girdles for production and wholesale. Bras, full body shapers, etc. will still be available on a custom order basis. Still, that does not mean that the research does not continue into the mysterious world of bra sizing -- oh, on the contrary! Today, I stumbled across the website of an extraordinary gentleman: Edward Pechter, M.D. F.A.C.S.

Now, being as I am all about supporting a woman's love of her body as is, embracing what you've been given and using natural methods to flatter and perfect female curves, I was at first a little snuffy reading that he was a plastic surgeon. But it didn't take more than a few second to read on about all the wonderful things he has actual done in his field.

From his bio:
"He received the award for excellence in clinical teaching for plastic surgery residents at UCLA in 2005 and was part of a medical team that traveled to China and performed free palate repairs for children there."

But most importantly for me, and why I am devoting a blog to this man, is his epiphany work on BRA SIZING!!

"Many women express their goals for breast surgery in terms of bra size yet bra size is rarely discussed among plastic surgeons. When I decided to learn bra size measurement ten years ago I discovered that the traditional method of bra sizing was confusing and inaccurate, with few lingerie saleswomen able to explain how the system worked. I began measuring my patients before, during, and after breast surgery, asking what size bra fit them the best, and having them try on bras from a stock I purchased for my office.

After several years I discovered a relationship between underbust circumference, breast width, and bra size and these findings were published in September 1998 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. After many more measurements and breast operations over the following years I revised my measuring system to reflect the fact that cup size varies with band size. That is, for example, the "C" cup of a size 36 bra is larger than the "C" cup of a size 34 bra but smaller than the "C" cup of a size 38 bra. This information forms the basis of the Size Me Up! slide-chart, which I hope will help women of all ages, shapes, and sizes find a comfortable, well-fitting brassiere."

And, thus, the Size Me Up! was born! Following his instructions purportedly reveals the "correct" bra size 90% of the time!

Much of that may seem like a "duh" to me and perhaps some of you, but even with the knowledge of knowing what *doesn't* work, and how everything is sort of relative in cup sizing, I was still having a hell of a time finding an way to pinpoint then exactly what *would* work. I don't know why his method is not more widely known, and I hope that what seems to be more women on the quest for proper bra sizing these days, that this will soon change. It seems his sizing chart was for sale on his website at some point, but it is not currently in stock. I have written an inquiry hoping to make sure these are soon replenished, only to find news of his passing directly after sending. Not only that, but there is a memorial service TODAY in his honor, held at the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt, Valencia at 6 p.m. PDT. Oopsies!

Anyway, I feel it is only honoring and giving the most respect for a man who made great attempts at untangling the giant web that has become modern bra sizing issues and I hope my email is read and appreciated by whomever is carrying on his business. Besides, a portion of all proceeds from his system go to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center, so it's all for a good cause to boot!

P.S. He also spent 30 years of his practice in Chicago.....JUST SAYIN'!!

Anyway, I have plenty more to say on the topic of sizing and fit issues, as well as a TON of photos and such to post from the incredible awesomeness of my recent events, but this will all have to wait for another day!!

First up, we have an amazing event brought you by Chicago Social Magazine: the Don Julio Lofts -- a three day exclusive nightlife spot July 7-9th. The Grand Opening and Media Event on the 7th, I will be unveiling a special piece inspired by Don Julio's 1942 variety of premium tequila, so you know it will be extra 1942 vintage sexy fun! The 9th will be a grand fashion show, plus a special guest performance by Shiny Toy Guns and more. From what I've been told, the 9th is at or near capacity, so call ASAP to see if you can still go if you are interested!!

What about for the West Coasters? Well, make sure you come out July 11th for the special DVD release party of the Viva Las Vegas 13 fashion show! I am definitely not the first to say it, but when Mosh and Viva Van Story pair up on a photoshoot, they just simply cannot be beat! A dream team for sure, and this time I was lucky enough to have a piece involved! This scandalous little number is actually a design dreamed up by Mosh herself...and being as she has been such a sweetheart to me and a doll to work with, I was more than happy to oblige in lending a hand to make this piece come true! Guess who shares my birthday?

The bra.

On May 27th, I had my golden birthday and the bra had it's 100th birthday. That's like the platinum birthday? I don't know how these things work. Anyway, fate a bit much? Yes, I think so. :)

With further inspection, I found (according to the New York Times), underwear was first worn in two pieces in 1889, and the word "brassiere" was first used in 1907, but it wasn't until 1910 when "the New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob constructed the first bra as we would recognize it today."

Just disregard the opening quote in that article, I only wish the bras in my collection took 20 minutes to make. Please take comfort in knowing that a lot more time and love goes into each of my creations than that! ;p

So, I think the warm weather is finally starting to stick in Chicago (knock on wood!), we've had some really beautiful ones lately. Surely puts me in a pleasant mood! Today in the studio, I am getting mandatory headshots and cute CFI group photos (eep) as well as going over a a quickbooks tutorial (double eep!) I am a major blinker when it comes to studio shoots, so hopefully I don't spoil it for everyone! ;)

Speaking of photo shoots, the images from the Barbie Suite shoot are just about ready, I will be so excited to post them! Soon, very soon! (very small behind the scenes preview?)

I would also like to announce that I will officially be at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas June 2-7! I will be vending there, so if you were at the fashion show in Vegas and were bummed that you weren't able to find me afterwards, this is your chance! I will be taking orders for custom lingerie with a wide variety of options to choose from, but I also promise to make the process simple, hassle-free, and most importantly fun! There will be plenty of samples to try on, play with, and get your imaginiation pumping. And if a sample piece happens to be exactly what you are looking for and your exact size, you will be more than able to take that piece home with you at the end of the weekend!

Selling along side me will be a good friend, and exquisite jewelry designer Madeline Maciag of Peitit Rococo! Her jewelery is romantic, ultra feminine, and sophisticated...I think we will be a lovely team for all of your girlish needs, and I hope you can stop by to say hello! :)

Hello lovelies!

So, while photos are still coming in, CD's are being mailed and set shoots are being edited...I just could not wait any more and decided to post round one sprinkling of the fabulous fun had at Viva Las Vegas this year! It was my runway debut for the lingerie, nerve-wracking and stressful to say the least, but in the end I am in love with all of the talented and amazing women (and backstage men!) that helped to pull off such a successful show! I had six looks to feature in the show, and I centered each one around a pin-up girl archetype. I selected each of my models carefully, and drew inspiration from my perceived image each of them gave off.

The segment opened with Miss Erica Vaughn, my "cheescake" pin-up. I noticed Erica is really great at hamming it up in photos, especially on her extended Myspace portfolio, she makes adorable faces and has a really fun and playful air to her. Thus, she came out to the song "Comic Strip" by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. (I was even able to find a version in English, with the same lovable Pops! and Whiz's!)

[Please excuse the "Canada" found behind the girls on screen, there was a mix-up with production and they mistaken labeled my company as being based in Canada. As much as I love our dear friends to the north, and represented them well with two of my models residing there, Dottie's Delights is indeed based in Chicago and I must represent my home town!]

Erica was followed by my two "good girls:" Miss Margie Maraschino as the "sophisticate pin-up" and Miss Amanda Lee as the "sweet and innocent pin-up." Walking to the tune of "Just an Old Fashioned Girl" by Eartha Kitt:

Miss Margie Maraschino had a little bit more well-deserved snobbery to her character...after all, look at that fur! (and fine vintage lace detailing):

And dear, sweet Miss Amanda Lee donning the newest addition to my collection, the one-piece shaper corsolette! (P.S. You must also check out her blog, she is a true vintage aficionado and always has some amazing little ensemble to show off!)

Ah, but the good times can't last forever. So, the two-shoes are soon rudely interrupted by the bad girls, and an old rockabilly gem called "Skull and Crossbones" by Sparkle Moore! Enter Miss Michelle Gateaux, the "bad-ass pin-up!"

Yes, she even pulled a cigarette and lighter from her bustier and took a puff on stage. I hear that there a really awesome shots of this to come....

To back her up, in comes Miss Anna Coquette -- our "fetish pin-up" (yes, character absolutely inspired by the legendary Miss Bettie Page) complete with riding crop in hand, in which she has let's say a "moment" with Michelle before taking center stage:

Ah, at this point you may think the show is over. But you would be wrong. How can you end a show without a little bit of pizazz?

Enter Miss Jolee Blon, my "diva pin-up" coyly hiding our next creation:

Jolee had a beautiful fan dance (the fans are actually hers, she is a professional burlesque performer based out of LA, boy did I luck out on those!) that she taunted everyone with against the background of Mae West's "Love is the Greatest Thing." But, what is she hiding?

And of course, no show is complete without the final walk-through, including a rare appearance by me (no time to doll-up, but I did manage a polka dottie dress for the occasion) and my insanely talented hair and make-up artist Jessi Pagel (check out the "art direction" section of her website, you won't be sorry!):

Phew! I survived Viva Las Vegas 13!

My goodness gracious! Viva was a trip and a half, indeed! I had such a blast, I cannot say thank you enough to all of the amazing people that I worked with and met over the weekend! Photos are starting to trickle in slowly, but I want more, more! I don't actually have a camera myself, so I am relying on all of the seemingly endless photos that were taken throughout the weekend. If you have any photos of me or my clothing designs either from the fashion show or otherwise, please send them my way! I am holding out on posting until I receive a few more back, so stay tuned! And if you have any feedback about what you saw, liked, didn't like I would loove to hear it, no matter what it is!

It is times like these that I really do wish the website was up and running, but one step at a time kiddos! Remember, the official collection will not be debuting until Spring 2011, so until then it is custom lingerie only! Not a bad deal, though, considering that means the options and opportunities are pretty much endless! And my prices are more than fair considering all the detail and quality that I put into every piece.

Blonde Ambition Bellydance

This is a little late in posting, but Sabah and Lauren, the two loveable blondes of The Bellydance Superstars are joining forces for a mini tour with a new venture called The Blonde Ambition Belly Dance Tour! They were just in Arizona (sorry for being late on the ball), and now they are on their way to Dallas and Austin, Texas to show the south how it's done! Offering both workshops and dazzling performances, they are certainly worth catching. And of course, featuring costumes made by yours truly, so don't miss it!

The most interesting part about their tour, is that unlike more traditional belly dance shows, Sabah and Lauren defy any preconceived notion of what it means to be an American belly dancer. It is a roller coaster mix of styles that blend vintage and contemporary interpretations of movement and music, creating a truly unique experience filled with highly theatrical vignettes. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to our launch party, it was such a blast! The place was packed, the Pop-Up Shop looks amazing, the food and drinks were delicious, and the hot models on pedestals didn't hurt either! I really wish I was able to talk to everyone, those two hours really do just fly by. As promised here are some photo highlights from the event:

The Launch Party is more of a meet and greet and celebration, but if you want to get into business, the trunk show is where to be. Remember, all of these events are taking place at the luxurious 900 Shops, located on 900 N. Michigan, 5th floor. There are two stores: the Pop-Up Shop, which will be open every Thursday through Sunday for one month, and the Event space next door, which houses all of the trunk shows, fashion shows, and other special happenings of all the Incubator participants. Vegas Barbie Shoot!

Another really cool event I will be participating while at Viva Las Vegas: The Ultimate Photo Shoot Experience with Mitzi & Co.! They have the amazing Barbie Suite at the Palms, and are booking appointments for Friday, April 2nd and Sunday April 4th! Behold all of the glory:

Can you imagine all the fantasticness that Mitzi will be able to produce in this setting? I think I will go into sensory overload here. Not only do you receive the best set of photos you've ever taken, you are also pampered to the extreme -- a CUSTOM MADE Barbie-style outfit (made by yours truly, or several other designers if you're not feeling in a lingerie mood), yours to KEEP! As well as perfect pin-up hair and make-up by Miss Rockwell DeVil and Chris Colucci, several wardrobe changes with plenty of stock to choose from, food and beverages, and a Mitzi & Co. goodie bag full of delightfulness! You will never feel more glamorous. I believe there are still a few spots open, but they may already be fully booked, so if you are interested you'd better move fast and see if she can squeeze you in! :)

Vintage Store Finds

So, I was out with friends the other day, meandering around just north of the milwaukee/ashland/division intersection and we happened across this strange little antique shop. The building was deliciously old with dark wood and large storefront windows. This alone would have been enough to entice me in, but then they go and have an entire array of vintage fabric yardage on display! Almost all of it from the 40s through 60s! It was the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, and yet they weren't exactly open until a very charming older gentleman came over and asked if we would like to go in (but he had to go around as he didn't actual have keys to the front door). The inside of the store was just as much of a dream, with a large trunk full of more fabrics and oodles of vintage patterns, as well as all the other wonderful knick knacks that you hope for in a idiosyncratic antique shop. I hadn't spent money in awhile so I decided to splurge and buy at least a few cuts of fabric (I mean, how could I NOT!). So, crappy photo and all, but in person absolutely splendid!

These are both beloved 1940's rayon (which is collectable, and why it wasn't exactly cheap)...they feel amazing and being a sucker for great patterns, polka dots (dottie's delights, after all), and PINK, I was in love! Who knows what I will actually make with these, but that is a whole different story......

YAY MY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT -- CFI 2010!

I am so happy to finally be able to announce, I will be one of six designers in the Chicago Fashion Incubator this year! What does that mean, you may ask?

"The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) provides six emerging Chicago-based designers with the resources, including workspace, curriculum and mentoring, to launch their careers in fashion. The Designers in Residence (DIR) are provided office space, including computers and software; a workshop room with sample production space and a resource section; as well as a showroom. DIR are required to complete a core curriculum of workshops and seminars conducted at the Incubator location at Macy’s on State Street for the duration of a one-year period starting in March 2010. CFI is part of the Mayor's Fashion Initiative, which supports and promotes fashion designers living and working in Chicago through events, seminars and City programs." more info on CFI

The other designers I will be working with are all amazing and charming. This will be one of the most diverse group yet, and I'm so thankful to be a part of it. Be sure to check them all out and follow all of us throughout our journey!

Viva Las Vegas!

Hey All!

I'm so excited to finally announce one of my big upcoming events! I will be one of the designers showing at the Viva Las Vegas fashion show this year! Viva Las Vegas is the biggest rockabilly event in the world, it's a huge fun weekend of music, car shows, burlesque and fashion. It will be taking place April 1-4th at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, with Wanda Jackson and Chuck Berry headlining this year! Check out all the fun and festivities at www.vivalasvegas.net. Part Two

I finally got a chance to finish up editing the second set from my shoot with Mitzi and Mosh! There was a grand pink damask stuffed chair in the scene, but I think because of my urgency to get to the airport and scrambling around not paying attention to the shoot, I rushed this part a bit too much. Thus most of those photos with the chair are in, er, various states of undress (which -- I am just guessing -- but may be going up on Mosh's official site) and not as usuable for me. I am SUCH a sucker for pink and green! It will be a major color combination staple in my upcoming line of lingerie. Ah well, it is a good thing I was working with such talented people, because the photos with the simple mint green walls worked just fine! Enjoy!

We Love Sabah!

So, fun fact of the day...besides the lingerie line, I also design custom belly dance and burlesque costumes! One of my favorites is bellydance-ballet fusionist, Sabah of The Bellydance Superstars. We worked together for her most recent feature, a beautifully romantic choregraphed piece where she is accompanied by two of the troupe's tribal dancers. She presented me with amazing vintage inspiration pictures, and told me to do what I wanted with them. These were some of my favorites of the photos (including some that I found myself after expanding research):

So, I combined my favorite elements of these (and many more!), added my own little touches and wa-lah!

I went with a bit of an art deco influence, and I even found some really cool authentic vintage pearl, rhinestone, and glass bead trims. Looking at the photos on tour (plenty more in her performance photo gallery), I realized it also gives the piece a bit of an Alice in Wonderland feel, which works out well as that's one of Sabah's favorites. She then told me, apparently the girls had been thinking the same thing and interpreting the dance as Alice dancing with "eat me" and "drink me." Too cute!

Catch The Bellydance Superstars on their next tour, or watch out for the next DVD release, they just filmed the new show, in 3D! Featuring this piece and many other amazing performances! Go Sabah! :)

So there are so many new things on the burner for 2010, I hardly know where to begin! I'm just starting to go through the fabulous photos from my visit to Los Angeles in December, I am so excited about them! I was able to shoot with the amazing Mitzi & Co...she has the most lovely studio set-up, everything my heart could ever desire! Our model extraordinaire was Mosh, a bendy doll dream and real treat to watch her pose with such precision. The only downside was that I had a flight to catch that evening, so I had to rush things a little bit and we weren't able to get through everything, but we sure did quite a lot! Three different lingerie sets -- all dying to be added to the store! In fact, the store is quite overdue for an overhaul as it is, but first I will have to get caught up on the orders going out the door already!
